While dreaming up patterns for wearables and accessories I’ve been trying to think of something to crochet for my bright and cheery colors loving husband. He’s not really a “hat guy”, and it’s currently 90 degrees outside, so a sweater wouldn’t do him much good either. I came up with this drink cozy because it’s something he can use year ’round, it has primary colors, and a little edge to it with the spikes.
The Inspiration & Design
Ever since I learned the spike stitch, I’ve wanted to use it in a project, but I couldn’t find anything that would fit my aesthetic. The Spiked Drink Cozy with its rainbow and overall cuteness fits the bill nicely. You don’t have to do it in rainbow colors of course- I’m just still trying to use up every bit of the scrap yarn from the Rainbow Cardi and the Namaste Yoga Mat Bag.
The Yarn
The yarn is the same yarn I’ve been using for the past couple of weeks, but I do recommend using as many colors as you can to bring out the spike stitch. Don’t know how to spike stitch? Just make a few rows of single crochet (or another flat stitch), and then put your hook under the row as directed to pull up a loop. Pull through two loops to complete the stitch. Easy!

Read above to learn how to do the spike stitch. Having trouble? Check out this tutorial video.
CH1 does not count as a stitch.
Try to make it so that the spiked stitches line up with eachother. The stitch can wander a little and your stitch counts may not be exact, but you can easily line up the spiked stitches to make the pattern look nice!
