I wanted a fanny pack, so I made a fanny pack. Rather than buy one, I figured I could make one with a little wine and ingenuity. It worked. Why did I want a fanny pack? The world may never know.
These eternally “so dorky they’re cool” pouches have been staples of the festival scene for years now, and I decided to put my own twist on the design by focusing on circles and letting the yarn do most of the work.
The Inspiration & Design
I had a fanny pack (or bum bag/waist belt) as a kid, so it’s been quite some time since I’ve worn one myself. I knew I needed something that would hold my iPhone XS, chapstick and billfold, so I made this bag *just* big enough to carry a few items. The circles make this an easy pattern to complete as there’s very little to do by way of construction.
The bag is named for the Shaky Beats festival that pops up every year at Piedmont Park which is next to my home. I always see concert goers partying the weekend away, and take note of what they’re wearing and what they’re carrying!
The YarnÂ
I found the yarn during a massive clearance sale at Hobby Lobby. The Watercolor Hues yarn is a very sturdy super bulky acrylic yarn. If you can’t find this exact brand, I suggest holding another super bulky yarn double and going up a hook size in order to achieve the firmness of Watercolor Hues.
